For 14 years, Freeman has written the "Farmer's Calendar" column in the Old Farmer's Almanac. Here is a collection of choice pieces that capture the essence of year-round country living in New England. Among the topics are weather, wildife, the countryside, gardening, tools and snow. Freeman says, "If you can't garden well, garden neat." He confesses that his own luck in gardening is in direct proportion to the size of the seed he plants-success with peas and beans, failure with carrots and lettuce. He ruminates on weather forecasts and snowstorms and their aftermath, and tells us how to shovel snow with style. This is sheer delight for readers who enjoy nature and country living.
