John Wilcock recognizes that Los Angeles is an amalgamation of contrasts, with Hollywood and earthquakes, nude beaches, and automobile mania, the music scene, body worship, gangs, valleys, and canyons. And Catherine Karnow's photography does a stand-up job capturing the images of a city that takes its images to heart, with scantily clad peroxide blondes, red convertibles, mastodons sinking in La Brea Tar Pits, and bronzed beauties smooching while clasping their tubes of sun block. Whether you live there or dream of visiting, Wilcock's prose and Karnow's photography do justice to the weird facets and juxtapositions that make L.A. so sensational.
