Synopsis
Science has made greater progress since the start of the twentieth century than in the preceding five thousand years, probing further into the depths of the universe, the structures of the earth, the interior of the atom, and the riddle of life than ever before. Wherever one looks, science dominates modern life. Without an understanding of science it is impossible to understand the world today. In this book a unified and organized view of modern science is presented. The book is divided into four 1) THE UNIVERSE - Takes the reader on a celestial tour from the moon to the other members of our solar system, the stars and nebulae of the Milky Way and distant galaxies of the universe. 2) THE EARTH- Tells the story of the tiny portion of the universe with special interest for us, including its origins and evolution, its structure and nature, and the newest theories of sea-floor spread and continental drift. 3) THE ATOM - Deals with the organization of matter, including a discussion of the nature of energy and its relation to matter, the quantum theory and relativity. 4) LIFE - Carries the story of microscopic forms of life to the climax in man, including a discussion of new theories of the origin of life.
