Elizabeth Peters's unforgettable heroine Amelia Peabody makes her first appearance in this clever mystery. Amelia receives a rather large inheritance and decides to use it for travel. On her way through Rome to Egypt, she meets Evelyn Barton-Forbes, a young woman abandoned by her lover and left with no means of support. Amelia promptly takes Evelyn under her wing, insisting that the young lady accompany her to Egypt, where Amelia plans to indulge her passion for Egyptology. When Evelyn becomes the target of an aborted kidnapping and the focus of a series of suspicious accidents and mysterious visitations, Amelia becomes convinced of a plot to harm her young friend. Like any self-respecting sleuth, Amelia sets out to discover who is behind it all.
Elizabeth Peters was born and brought up in Illinois and earned her Ph.D. in Egyptology from the University of Chicago's famed Oriental Institute. Peters was named Grand Master at the inaugural Anthony Awards in 1986 and Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America at the Edgar Awards in 1998. She lives in a historic farmhouse in western Maryland.

Price clipped to D/J. When Amelia Peabody's domineering old father finally died, her lawyers warned her against fortune hunters. Of course she must marry - in Victorian England there was no suitable alternative for a spinster. And even one so old as thrity-two could be assured of marriage when her inheritance was considered. But Amelia was having none of it. And she had inherited not only her father's money but also his strong will. She would travel. And she fancied Egypt. After her hired companion fell ill in Rome and had to return to England, Amelia replaced her with abeautiful young girl named Eveyn Barton-Forbes. Evelyn's past - though aristocratic - was slightly tarnished, but Amelia was not deterred. Neither was she deflected from her purpose by the mysterious intruder in her hotel room in Cairo. Nor did she falter at the rudeness she encountered in Radcliffe Emerson, the dedicated archeologist whose younger brother fell instantly in love with Evelyn. Amelia's determintation and her healthy sense of humour would be needed more and more as the expedition proceeded. For unaccountable things begin to happen, climaxing when a tomb is discovered, and the inhabitant of the tomb disappears in the night. The inhabitant was a mummy, dead for two thousand years. What had begun as an exciting adventure for self-willed Amelia develops into a terrifying struggle for her sanity and her life. When she learns the secret of the walking mummy, she also discovers the secret she had been hiding in her own heart in a shattering conclusion of terror and romance. 273 pp. From The Library Of Roma Woodroffe Egyptologyst (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.).
