A good salary and an all-expenses-paid summer spent a sprawling Arizona ranch is too good a deal for fledgling anthropologist D.J. Abbott to turn down. What does it matter that her rich new employer/benefactor, Hank Hunnicutt, is a certified oddball who is presently funding all manner of off-beat projects, from alien conspiracy studies to a hunt for dragon bones? There's even talk of treasure buried in the nearby mountains, but D.J. isn't going to allow loose speculation -- or the considerable charms of handsome professional treasure hunter Jesse Franklin -- to sidetrack her. Until Hunnicutt suffers a mysterious accident and then vanishes, leaving the weirdos gathered at his spread to eye each other with frightened suspicion. But on a high desert search for the missing millionaire, D.J. is learning things that may not be healthy for her to know. For the game someone is playing here goes far beyond the rational universe -- and it could leave D.J. legitimately dead.

Elizabeth Peters (1927-2013) was a New York Times bestselling author whose novels were often set against historical backdrops. She earned a PhD in Egyptology at the University of Chicago. She also wrote bestselling books under the pseudonym Barbara Michaels.
D.J. Abbott needs to get away, and an unbelievably generous offer from Hank Hunnicutt to participate in a dig six hundred miles from home seems like the ideal solution. Grace Conlin is effective in her wry, self-deprecating portrayal of D.J. However, her occasional mispronunciation and oddly placed emphasis are disconcerting in an otherwise American English recording. Peters's fans will not be deterred, for the action is compelling and the characters are well developed. Others may find that the misplaced emphases detract from the overall performance. "With a face and figure suitable for a centerfold, and an appetite for sweets like a teenager, D.J. Abbott found it almost impossible to convince people - especially men - that she had a good, sensible mind. But she did. And it told her not to accept the job she was offered at Hank Hunnicutt's ranch in Arizona. Still, the ranch was famous for its luxury and its food. And Hank was a fabulously eccentric character, a fascinating mixture of genius and childlike faith in the people around him. D.J. decided to give it a go. She knew she would be running into a lot of exotic types among Hank's guests. He was a notorious pushover for all the practitioners of 'occult arts.' But, she told herself, her sense of humor would see her through. And at first it did. . . Then, suddenly, everything changed. Hank - wonderful, generous Hank - suffered an 'accident' that only someone in the house could have arranged. While the guests eyed each other and D.J. with suspicion and fear, Hank disappeared. Abducted. Perhaps dead. No one knew who had done it, or why. Except the criminal. And it became more and more apparent that the next target was D.J."; Ex-Library; 7¾" - 9¾" Tall.
