Grade 4-7 Although concentrating on the behavior and physical characteristics of Vulpes vulpes , the red fox, Lavine includes chapters on the origins of foxes, folklore and superstition, and man's relationship to this adaptable and often misunderstood creature. Other species are briefly discussed, including the tree-climbing gray fox and more exotic relatives in Africa and South America. The well-organized text is coherent and easily understood. Numerous black-and-white photographsalthough of uneven qualityadd to the text and include several endearing shots of kits as well as intriguing historical drawings reflecting past (and present) interpretations of the character of the fox. The inclusion of this historical section dealing with the fox' role in folklore and literature helps to make this book more than just another nature study. This, plus the comprehensiveness of the text, makes Lavine's book a useful and entertaining addition to any library collection. Foxes (Dodd, 1981) by Kay McDearmon is as competent but less detailed. It also concentrates on North American species. Cynthia M. Sturgis, Ledding Library, Milwaukie, Oreg.
