Reviews

Grade 4-6 A short, fast-paced mystery story with an underlying theme of friendship. The action takes place during two rainy, foggy days in a Nebraska town along the Missouri river. Eleven-year-old Jane, a loner by choice, resents it when Dinah, a new girl in town, tries to involve herself in her life, especially when she calls Jane ``Toad'' in front of everyone. That plus Dinah's angry, belligerent manner makes Jane vow to have nothing to do with her. But when she learns that the girl's behavior is a cover-up for her concern about her sick mother, she relents and agrees to help her find out where her younger step-brother is getting all the money and jewels that he's been bringing home. A once timid Jane finds herself following the boy down a rabbit hole into a dark, spider-infested tunnel. They find the money, the jewels, and the robbers who have hidden their loot in the tunnel. Although the identity of the robbers will surprise few readers, the breezy writing style will carry them along to the happy but pat ending in which Dinah learns that her mother will recover and Jane is pleased to accept ``Toad'' as a nickname and Dinah as a friend. Shura displays still another talent with her new novel, different from The Search for Grissi and other award-winning stories. This is a fine, suspenseful tale told by Janie Potter, 11, who lives in Riverton, Neb. A new girl, Dinah Dobbins, arrives in town and asks Janie if she has seen Dinah's little stepbrother "Blitzen." Janie hasn't, so the stranger calls her a toad and runs off. Later the girls cooperate, in spite of mutual resentments, when they try to find the small boy who has disappeared. Janie and Dinah finally track him into a tunnel and a trap set by thieves who have cached a fortune there, a development leading to a grand surprise. Rogers's graphics heighten the atmosphere sustained in the well-told story. Ages 9-up.
