Grade 6-8-- Shabbily dressed Nikolai Nikolayevich, the town eccentric, is not concerned with appearances, but only with buying up old family portraits and rehanging them on the walls of his ancestral home. One day, with no explanation, he appears with his skinny and ragged 13-year-old granddaughter Lena, who is promptly nicknamed Scarecrow. Only one boy, Dimka Somov, comes to her defense; however, as things turn out, he behaves more contemptibly than all the others. Because of his cowardice Lena is cruelly ostracized and mistreated by the class. In the end she is vindicated, but it comes too late. Lena, despite insufferable treatment by her classmates, maintains her integrity throughout, never losing faith in humanity--only in herself. The students are left with a sense of shame, not because of their behavior, but because they misidentified the culprit. The story is an interesting commentary about teenagers in present-day Russia. However, it may be daunting to casual readers for several reasons. In time it is possible to sort out each of the students (and a more disagreeable cast of young people is hard to imagine), but at first the many unfamiliar surnames will be challenging. The fact that the story is told in a series of Lena's recollections adds to the confusion. While not an easy book to follow, Scarecrow does raise important issues that could lead to stimulating multilevel discussions. --Phyllis G.
