From School Library Journal:
Grade 6 Up-- Meek provides pertinent updating of political, social, and economic material about Scotland. The writing is clear and lively, the style a bit more demanding than earlier series of the same title, and will supplement Dorothy B. Sutherland's Scotland (Childrens, 1985). History is the main thrust--over half of the 17 chapters concern historical aspects of topics such as industry and invention. Meek offers timely insights into the effects of the petroleum boom and bust, the nationalist movement, and Scotland and England's possible future in the developing European scene. Geography and wildlife are covered, and discussions of food, education, sports, etc. are woven into a chapter about a typical day in the lives of the populace at home, work, and school (a typical Halloween day, that is). Within each chapter are the "Mini Facts" boxes that are part of this series and add interest. The attractive format includes maps and numerous photographs, some with lengthy captions that add information as well. The bibliography includes mostly adult titles, although Mollie Hunter's novels are noted. All in all, this is a good and useful summary of the country for older students and interested adults. --Ruth M. McConnell, San Antonio Pub . Lib .
