From School Library Journal:
Grade 3-5-- Nichols paints a portrait of a Caribbean childhood with these brief, simple poems about the pleasures of a "sweet rainwashed/ sunripe mango," the parakeets that "wheel/ screech/ scream/ in a flash of green/ among the forest trees," and the alligator--"She's a-big. She's a-mean. She's a-wild"--living at the "muddy slushy end/ of the old Caroony River." Although many of the poems deal with universal experiences--trying to get to sleep after listening to ghost stories or a girl's quiet contentment as Granny combs her hair--the frequent use of rhythmic nonstandard English establishes a lyrical sense of place: "Me mudder pound plantain mek fufu/ Me mudder catch crab mek calaloo stew. . ." In expertly shaded pencil drawings, Binch creates a set of realistic, expressive adults and children who are working, playing, and resting amidst farm animals and shanties in a lush tropical landscape. An inviting mix of the exotic and the familiar .
