Fourth grade is a time of turmoil for the irrepressible Gus, whose imaginative ideas constantly get him into trouble as he tries to train his new dog, organizes a school art show, and battles his enemy Nanny Vincent.

Grade 4-6-- Fourth in the series about the Howard family, this one continues where Hedgehogs in the Closet (Lippincott, 1988) ended. Back from England, the family resettles in Ohio. Gus, now in fourth grade, is continually thinking of ways to get revenge on the class tattletale, Nanny, who taunts him constantly. His great ideas include making Nanny sit on her spaghetti dinner and putting itching powder in her parade costume. He also gets into trouble at school for selling (at a profit) pencils and candy to help finance supplies for his puppy. To keep Gus out of trouble and reward him for his artistic talent, Mr. Keene makes Gus chair of the class art show. Gus doesn't win first place, but he matures enough to end his feud with Nanny and to enroll in summer art classes. Carris continues her upbeat style of writing. The school scenes are believable, and the plot moves swiftly. A book that will succeed as a read-aloud or read-alone. --Bonnie L. Raasch, C. B. Vernon Middle School, Marion, IA
