Synopsis

This book responds to a critical need for highly qualified personnel who will become exemplary professionals because of their advanced knowledge, skills, and experiences in working with students and adults that have varying disabilities, including Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Since Board Certification for behavior analysts was introduced, there has been an expansion of training programs in Applied Behavior Analysis to meet the demands from school districts, health insurers, and families. In spite of these developments, a case studies book has not been available that uses the Behavior Analyst Certification Board Task List, Fourth Edition (BACB) guidelines for educating individuals receiving their BCBA, or for those in the field such as teachers, and service providers. The goal of this book is to fill that need. Twenty-one case studies are provided--case studies with complete analysis, case studies with partial analysis, and case studies without analysis. The first seven cases present a complete analysis, which allows the reader to analyze and develop a comprehensive Positive Behavior Support Plan containing detailed answers and supporting data systems. The second seven case studies include the areas from the BACB Task List, and the items are most relevant for analysis, but the analysis is not complete. This enables the reader to complete the analysis themselves which will promote skill building. The final seven case studies do not contain an analysis or guideline. This allows the reader to further develop their skills by creating their own guidelines for analysis, and implementing their plan. The use of this text will improve the comprehensive analysis and coverage of the developing supports for individuals with disabilities, provide direct applicability to applied settings, and the ability to use the case studies for assignments and/or exams. The format, readability, and detailed description of instructional methodology makes this text a valued resource for instructors and behavior analysts responsible for improving the skills of people with disabilities.

Review

This book aims to provide a resource that will allow students and professionals working in the field of learning disability or autism to develop their practical skills around the use of applied behavior analysis. The main audience for this book is students undertaking their accreditation for Board Certified Behaviour Analyst (BCBA), professionals working within the learning disability field, or tutors supporting students through their BCBA accreditation. The authors highlight that this book will allow readers to explore a wide range of issues, supporting them to develop their skill beyond entry level, towards the confident development and implementation of interventions. The book links contents with specific learning points in the Behaviour Analyst Certification Board Task List.

The main strengths of the book are the strong linking of contents with the Behaviour Analyst Certification Board Task List. It is clear that this would provide a great deal of benefit to students in the field of ABA, working towards developing their practical skills. The layout of case studies is clear and logical, making the book easy to navigate. It provides sufficient breadth for a wide range of professionals and students, ensuring that they are able to gradually increase their skills and knowledge.

There are a number of limitations within this book that is important to consider. In particular, the book s focus is set firmly within the US social care and justice system, making references towards US legislation. This could make some of the material more difficult for individuals from other parts of the world to digest. Sections on the introduction of ABA and some of the issues considered could benefit from more sign-posting, allowing readers to seek out more in-depth information to increase their knowledge. In particular the paragraphs relating to implementation of interventions could benefit from more information, as this is a central part of intervention planning.

Overall the book achieves what it sets out to do and would provide a good resource for students and teachers alike. In particular its close link with the Behavior Analyst Certification Board Task List is a strength that responds to a need within the area of ABA and learning disability/autism. Readers will be able to gradually build their skill base towards intervention planning and prepare for their BCBA accreditation. Students are likely to benefit from using the resource to engage in effective clinical discussions with their supervisor. Overall the book should be recommended as a good resource for its target audience. --Frank Slokan, National Autism Advisor, The Richmond Fellowship, Scotland
