From School Library Journal:
Grade 5-8-- Following a brief overview of the constitutional mandate and actual conduct of the first United States census in 1790, the remainder of this slim volume concentrates on changes in census taking during the last half of the 20th century. Among the major revisions cited are the advance testing of both questions and procedure, the use of automation to both tally and extract information, careful screening and training of enumerators, extensive planning to locate as many residents as possible, as well as an informational program to encourage people to participate. Basic literature on this topic has been largely confined to the publications of the Census Bureau itself, so this source represents new material for this grade range. Black-and-white contemporary and historical photographs along with samples of census questionnaires complement the clear, engaging writing style. This title should find a ready audience as the bicentennial anniversary of the census is observed in 1990. Provision of a glossary, bibliography, and index also ensure continued use as a reference tool beyond next year. --Nancy E. Curran, formerly at Charleston Junior High School , IL
