PreS --The hot weather brings another adventure for Bear--a trip to the city pool with his father. The sights and sounds of this big, noisy place frighten him, but seeing his neighborhood friends frolicking in the water coaxes Bear into taking a dip with his dad. The little fellow clings tightly to Mr. Bear at first, but as he adjusts to the pool, he finds himself thrilling to the new experience. The text is simple, but more than the few words per page of Watanabe's earlier offerings. It perceptively and reassuringly examines the potentially frightening situation, and although those youngsters swimming since infancy may not relate to Bear's fears, most in this age group still make a gradual transition from baby pool to big pool with the help of a trusted adult. There is no mention of the safety issues. Ohtomo's familiar soft colored-pencil illustrations pleasantly follow the action, and the occasional use of pattern and interesting points of view add visual variety. An entry perfect for the summer season. --Virginia E. Jeschelnig, Willoughby-Eastlake Public Library, Willowick, OH
