About the Author

Jim Arnosky is well known for his "keen observations of nature and his fine artistic talent" (School Library Journal). He has written and illustrated many children’s books. Otters Under Water was called "first-rate natural history for the youngest" by Kirkus Reviews (pointer review), and School Library Journal wrote that in it "each of his creatures exhibits a distinct individualism." Arnosky, who slips in a self-portrait as a kind fisherman gently untangling the turtle, depicts his reptilian sojourner gliding through a well-lit ocean teeming with brightly colored life. The vivid artwork, cool and sunny, sometimes has a happier feel than the action it depicts. Similar in theme to April Pulley Sayre's Turtle, Turtle, Watch Out! (2000), the book will cause younger naturalists to come away with a greater appreciation for the sea turtle's toughness and help them understand the magnitude of the challenges to survival it faces from humans and nature both.
