In this rhyming story everyone has a forgetful day

Kindergarten-Grade 2-Osborn's flat, disproportionate, sophisticated style seems magically suited to Harper's lighthearted poem about a day in which "everybody forgot something." No consequences are dire, however: the school bus forgets to stop at the corner, an unfed puppy chews on the sofa, forgotten soccer equipment necessitates a game of hide-and-seek, peas burn on the stove top while Mama reads a romance, the barefoot heroine endures some gentle ribbing at school, the teacher mixes up everyone's lunch boxes, and so on. Readers will laugh out loud at the visual hyperbole, which includes a neighborhood castle on a huge map that a lost paperboy consults; Mama shuttling 13 kids to school, all cozily sardined into the family car; and the humorous antics of absentminded kids on a baseball diamond. Despite an occasional trip in the rhythm, this silly read-aloud with highly imaginative paintings will delight anyone who has ever had a memory lapse, providing playful reassurance for the occasionally scatterbrained.

When everyone around her becomes afflicted with memory lapses, a young girl's ordinary day becomes an adventure. From relatively minor forgettingan overcoat, a backpackthe rash of absentmindedness escalates to grandiose proportions as the bus driver forgets to take the children to school and the teacher forgets the day of the week. The girl, who keeps reminding readers that she has forgotten to put on her shoes, describes the day in a deadpan tone; the juxtaposition of absurd instances of forgetfulness and her calm retelling provides all the humor in this outlandish tale. Released from the bondage of the daily routine, Harper's characters are free to explore the unbeaten path: the soccer team, lacking their ball, plays hide-and-seek while the puppy, missing his meal, samples the sofa. Osborn's sophisticated illustrations, with off-kilter perspectives, are deeply hued and color- laden, fairly leaping off the page. This offbeat book will stir readers' imaginations.
