This alphabet book uses photographs of real children to illustrate its text. A multiethnic cast of boys and girls demonstrate words associated with each letter in an exciting and energetic fashion. For the most part, the words chosen are uninspired. A is for apple, X is for X-ray, E is for elephant. Some choices, though, are fun and surprising. U is for underwear, and three young children with their backs to the camera pose in their underwear; P is for popcorn, and a laughing redheaded sprite joyfully throws it in the air. The best thing about this cast is that they don't look like unrealistic, posed models. They all look like real children having fun by themselves and with friends. Marta Segal

Here's a recipe tried and true: on each page, one large letter, one familiar word that begins with that letter, and one big, bright close-up color photo of a beautiful young child. The versatile Williams (The Executioner's Daughter above) centers the camera lens on her models' faces, adding only an occasional prop or costume. She scatters laughter-provoking surprises, including a trio of girls in Underwear and a seemingly disembodied head floating on a sea of Jellybeans, between the traditional A – Apple and Z – Zipper. Of course, all the smiling, dirty, sleeping, pensive, joyful, shiny faces blatantly manipulate the viewer's emotions, but only the most curmudgeonly will object.
