Synopsis

This very simple rhyming alphabet book takes on a subject dear to the author's heart: goats! These lovable, frisky animals prance through  the pages, wreaking havoc and charming young children on each spread, from A is for Apple (a goat's favorite snack) to Z is for triplets Zig, Zag, and Zoe.

Patricia Polacco really knows her goats-she has raised more than a few herself at her Michigan farm-so her depictions of them are authentic and loving. And the easy, breezy alphabet text ("L is for lunch-get out of their way! M is for Munich; clothes taste better than hay.") will appeal to readers of all ages.

Reviews

PreSchool-K-Another treat for those who enjoyed Babushka's Mother Goose (Philomel, 1995) and love animals. A barefoot shepherd girl in Polacco's trademark colorful costume cuddles and frolics with rambunctious goats. The rhyming text, which alternates from special to ordinary, covers these animated creatures from "A is for Apple, the best treat of all" to "Z- amaZing!/Three babies came- /Zig, Zag and Zo' will be their names." Surrounded by idyllic scenes of flapping ducks, lapping kittens, and running dogs, the charming animals will energize any storytime. The movement is flawless in these compositions. In fact, the pencil-and-watercolor illustrations against white backgrounds steal the spotlight, with charming details such as a singing bluebird perched on a goat's back. A delight.

PreS-Gr.1. Goats--silly, sly, foolish, cute--are the subject of this rhymed alphabet book, affectionately drawn from life by a veteran author and illustrator. Polacco is pictured on the book jacket with a goat she raised on her farm in Michigan. Three sturdy girls in brightly patterned peasant clothes and bare feet share the pages with goats--kids, nannys, and billys. A pleasant bounce comes with the rhyme: "E is for Ears, / some floppy, some not. / F is for Flowers, / which goats eat a lot." The colors are clear and loud and the pictures fairly burst from the page: goats, cats, chicks, dogs, and bunnies gambol along with the goats amidst the letters. Three newly born kids--Zig, Zag, and Zoe--end the tale--and the alphabet. GraceAnne DeCandido
