Synopsis

No matter how intimidated or how blocked, any writer can tap into the vast oceans of creativity within--simply by following the exercises in this book.

Broken into small steps, each exercise is easy and takes only minutes to do. Yet each one forms a wave that brings with it a rush of ideas, images, and scenes as it crests. The words surge and flow past inhibitions and dangerous perfectionism--for every level of writer.

Reviews

Ayres (writing instructor and founder of the Elizabeth Ayres Center for Creative Writing in New York City) uses her 25 years of experience as a writing instructor to help novice writers get started. More than just a how-to, this book is like an actual writing course--Ayres even reminds the reader repeatedly not to continue until he/she has completed the previous assignment in the book. (This is a write-in workbook as well, which some libraries may find problematic.) Ayres is extremely nurturing to her students, and her book is filled with encouragement and reassurances, which sometimes become cloying. Although obviously designed for the easily intimidated beginner, the book's highly structured format may be useful even to some experienced writers for getting blocked creative juices flowing once again. Recommended for public libraries and for academic libraries supporting extensive writing programs.
