Synopsis
From the "From the defence against one attacker by one individual defender, the air defence concept has gone through the combinations of tactical and strategic ideas. The technique of air fighting has grown up; through individuals to simple formations to squadrons, from squadrons to tactical wings fighting against fleets of bombers escorted by clouds of fighters; from simple and largely ineffective control systems to elaborate and sohisticated networks of unimaginable ingenuity. The doctrine of air supremacy, the requirement for the dominance of air space by fighters as the first essential to all action on land, sea and air, has been painfully learnt and has been modified again. This narrative is the story of the Air Defence of this country, and of the Royal Air Force Command whose responsibility it is. Throughout history defence has been a secondary action of war, that can never have a plan entirely its own but must wait upon the action of the attacker and counter it with one of a hundred plans or perhaps with an improvisation that includes none them."
