W. H. Auden was one of the giants of 20th century English poetry. From his first poem in 1922 (written at the age of 15) to his death in 1973, Auden measured the current of our times in words. Charles Osborne paints a vivid portrait of Auden as only a close friend and experienced biographer could. Auden was a teacher, a performer, and a fearless talker. Besides poetry, he wrote learned articles, doggerel, and the librettos to operas by Igor Stravinsky and Benjamin Britten. Auden's social life was a virtual catalog of the literary lights of his day.
