Synopsis
הרומן "הנבחר", מאת הסופרת היהודייה-ולשית ברניס רובנס (2004-1923), הפך אותה בשנת 1970 לאישה הראשונה שזכתה בפרס בּוּקר היוקרתי. בסגנון כתיבה ייחודי ובהומור יהודי משובח מתארת רובנס את עלילותיה של משפחה יהודית בלתי-מתפקדת ממזרח לונדון, בשנות השישים של המאה שעברה. נורמן, הבן היחיד מבין שלושת ילדיהם של רבי צוֶוק ואשתו שרה הוא גאון. ילד פלא, משפטן מבריק, היהלום שבכתר, עד אשר בגיל ארבעים ואחת הוא סובל מהתמוטטות נפשית עקב רצונו למלא אחר כל הציפיות של הוריו. בלה, אחותו הרווקה של נורמן, עדיין גורבת את גרבי הילדה הלבנים הקצרים גם בהיותה אישה, ואילו אחותו הצעירה והיפהפייה התפקרה ונישאה לגוי, רחמנא ליצלן. ומעל כל זאת מרחפת רוחה של אם המשפחה שממשיכה לרדות בצאצאיה גם מתוך הקבר.

About the Author
Bernice Rubens was born is Wales and worked as both a writer and a film maker. She is the winner of the Booker Prize for The Elected Member, and was shortlisted for the same prize for a subsequent novel: A Five Year Sentence. She died in 2004.

Near Fine: firm and square binding in sharp maroon cloth; bright gilt; light, sporadic spotting to the edge of the page block; a few tiny, isolated spots to the margins, else crisp and clean, free from marks and inscriptions. The unclipped dustwrapper ('Net price 25s=£1.25' stated) is Very Good: bright and vibrant; a little sunning to the spine; rubbed to the extremities with minor surface loss; two short closed tears - 1.7cm and 1cm - to the lower edge, sealed to the verso with professional mending tissue; presented in a removable, archival-quality Brodart protective cover.
