Sir Nikolaus Pevsner (1902 - 1983) was one of the most influential writers on art and architecture that the twentieth century produced. Born in Leipzig of Russian Jewish stock, he left Hitler's Germany in 1935 and settles in London. Here he became a professor at the Univerity of London, and later Cambridge, and set about extending the public understanding of art and architecture in lectures, broadcasts, and, most famously, in the 46-volume series, 'The Buildings of England'.
