Denis Healey (1917-2015) attended Bradford Grammar School and from there went up to Oxford, where he began to test and expand his political views. After a distinguished war career, he travelled throughout a shattered Europe as International Secretary of the Labour Party. He became MP for Leeds in 1952 and rose to the highest political ranks, becoming Defence Secretary, Chancellor and a major figure in the Labour Party, standing twice for the leadership. He was made a life peer in 1992. The autobiography is also about Dennis Healey the man. His wide-ranging intelligence brilliantly counterpoints the pace of change Britain has witnessed since 1945, and illuminates his love of literature, art, music and photography. This is the memoir of a man in the a great politician, speaker, writer and above all a friend and family man - a book which will inspire all who read it with the wit, warmth and wisdom of Denis Healey. First published in 1989, The Time of My Life has a new afterword to bring the book up to date. Denis Healey is the author of Healey's Eye, a charming record of his photographic career, My Secret Planet, a linked anthology of his favourite books and poems, and When Shrimps Learn to Whistle, a collection of his writings and speeches.
