Synopsis
The last decade has been one of crisis for Africa. Neither African governments nor development agencies have made a significant impact on the quality of life of rural peoples. The enormous range of contexts in Africa limits the value of the search for universal solutions to endemic problems. Development from Within presents an alternative to structural adjustment, arguing for flexibility and specificity. Indigenous African scholars employ a range of case studies to explore the complex social relationships of power from the household to the state. Against the current tide of pessimism, the contributors argue for the knowledge and skill of the African peoples and illustrate the diverse means by which men and women in rural Africa struggle to survive.
