Synopsis

A practical, down-to-earth guide for those who work in teaching and learning in universities and who would like to carry out action research on their own practice. The model of ‘pedagogical action research’ has come from the author’s experience of over twenty years in carrying out such research and over six years of experience in encouraging colleagues to carry out small scale studies at an institutional, national and international level.

This accessible text gives the reader practical advice on how to research their own practice in a university context and contains a section on useful research tools, including two that the author has designed: the ‘learning objectives questionnaire’ and the ‘ideal inventory’, both of which have been widely used in the research context.

Review

The market in the UK could be significant. The author recently ran a conference in the UK on this topic, which was well attended. It is also evident from being on the editorial board of a number of HE journals that interest in pedagogical action research (PAR) has grown steadily over the years. The book is likely to have a greater market to academics in second-tier universities as top-class research universities do not value research into one’s teaching.... I think this would make a useful addition to your available publications. David Kember, The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Author of Enhancing University Teaching

The advantage that the proposed new book has is that it is written from a higher education perspective, and, as the author points out, nothing exists at present that addresses both action research and higher education. If it could be turned into the practical guide that the author claims it is, with a specific focus on doing action research in higher education, and what makes that different from doing action research elsewhere, then it would probably be a hit. Do you recommend that we should publish this book? Yes!
