From Library Journal

Feminist criticism began in the 1970s with the analysis of women's writing by women; in recent years, "gender studies" has come to constitute a field in which male and female critics consider the construction, meaning, and transformation of gender categories in works by authors representing both sexes and diverse sexualities. Taken together, this volume of (mostly) previously published essays introduces the reader to the various specialized critical agendas--Afro-American, New Historicist, deconstructive, reader-response--within which, under the alliance-politics rubric of "gender studies," sexist, racist, and homophobic ways of reading and thinking about literature are challenged. Showalter's introduction suggests useful critical contexts and historical pretexts for reading the essays.
