Introducing the Skylighters -- the shadowy band of little characters who create our skyscapes. Way, way up and quite out of sight they busily paint the glowing sunsets, vibrant lightning-scored skies, rippled mackerel skies, and glowering thunder clouds.
The Skywash Brigade hurries each morning to cover over the dark night with bright day colors. And so it continues whatever the weather -- whether hail, fog, or storm -- until by day's end the Skylighters carefully lower the fading sun into the sunset while the Moon Gang arrives to hoist up the brightly polished, silver moon.
The Skylighters are shown in spectacular watercolor illustrations, drawn by artist Neil Canning. Told in wonderfully witty rhyming verse by Graeme Garden, this unique presentation captures the drama and excitement of our ever-changing skies. It will appeal to any child (or adult) who has ever gazed in awe at the panorama overhead.

Graeme Garden is a well-known British television personality. This is his first book for children.
Neil Canning lives in Oxfordshire, England where he makes a living painting skyscapes.
Grade 2-4 The Skylighters are a gnomish crew of little painters who decorate the sky in colors, as their deeds are interpreted in verse. Old Mr. Blue mixes ``sky-wash.'' ``Dandy Dan De Dolamore/ Is captain of the color store,'' and so forth through the Lightning Conductor, the Moon-Gang, the Night-Lighters, and other characters who are responsible for winching the sun and moon up and down, lowering the fog-blind, and setting out the planets. The Skylighters is a missed opportunity. The poems mention colors that aren't visible in most of the sky-pictures. The sky is almost entirely limited to shades and tints of what seems to be ultra-marine blue right from the tube. It's a nice try, but readers will be left with the feelinfeeling that it could have been better. Ruth Semrau, Lovejoy School, McKinney,
