En palabras del profesor Luis Vega Reñón, contenidas en la presentación, el libro desarrolla tanto un estudio histórico de ciertas tradiciones —en especial de la que constituye la columna vertebral del tratamiento de las falacias en Occidente—, como un examen de los conceptos y casos que han ido resultando especialmente significativos. En esta segunda dimensión, teórica y analítica, la obra alienta también dos tipos de propósitos, algunos críticos y otros más bien constructivos, que no dejan de hallarse interrelacionados. Así, la revisión crítica del precario estado de las falacias bajo su tratamiento tradicional o estándar propicia como secuela constructiva la propuesta de una dialéctica formal.
