Scruff, a scraggly pooch as lovable as Bridwell's ``Clifford'' (Scholastic), walks about with his elderly owner trying to discover the cause of the ``odd, peculiar, unpleasant, nasty, awful smells'' that seem to be everywhere. He sniffs everything in the neighborhood, until it is discovered that Scruff himself is responsible for the odoriferous air. The story is fast paced and filled with humor; a few Briticisms, such as ``fishmonger'' and ``dustbin'' add sparkle to the vocabulary. As with Rose's The Tiger-Skin Rug (Prentice-Hall, 1979), the cartoonish watercolor drawings are brightly colored, animated and vividly expressive, particularly when they portray the anger/surprise of the shopkeepers as Grandma accuses them of selling foul-smelling wares.
