Ο "εξπρεσιονισμός" είναι ένας περιγραφικός όρος που περιλαμβάνει τόσο διαφορετικές μορφωτικές εκδηλώσεις, ώστε καταντά ουσιαστικά να μην έχει κανένα συγκεκριμένο νόημα: μου φαίνεται πως από όλους τους "ισμούς" στη λογοτεχνία και την τέχνη, είναι ο πιο δύσκολος να καθοριστεί, γιατί από τη μια μεριά η εφαρμογή του είναι τόσο γενικευμένη όσο και εξειδικευμένη, και από την άλλη καλύπτει το μεγαλύτερο πεδίο αυτού που θα μπορούσαμε να ονομάσουμε "μοντερνισμό", ενώ έχει τις ρίζες του τόσο στο δυναμισμό του "μπαρόκ" όσο και στη γοτθική παραμόρφωση.
