YA-A fascinating and enlightening piece of historical fiction that centers around Julius Caesar's rise to power. Through the voice of Marcus Caelius Rufus, a Roman commander during the civil war between Pompey and Caesar, Jaro fuses many elements of the times into a coherent account. Caelius attempts to sort out his allegiances through writing in a journal as he awaits an inevitable attack. Through flashbacks, readers see him coming of age, rising to a position of respect, commanding an army, and ultimately wavering on which side to support. The oratorical powers of Cicero, the military triumphs of Pompey the Great, and the ambitions of Caesar are all conveyed. The decadence that led to the fall of Rome comes through, as does the spirit of the times. YAs are sure to appreciate this look at the human side of this period in history.-Diane Goheen, Topeka West High School, KS

Today Zeller is a sculptor and writer; 50 years ago, just before the outbreak of World War II, he was an 11-year-old Berliner, eager for life. When he saw how determined the Nazis were to make life difficult for the Jews, and then even began to round them up for purposes he could not know, he and two cousins smuggled themselves into Holland. Because Zeller liked to write and draw, he kept a diary of his escape and escapades which now form the basis for this book. The book is very well written and recounts those cruel years as a backdrop to the story of boyhood. The book ends all too soon with Zeller's departure to a British children's camp, but there is promise of a sequel, the English years in the 1940s. Watch for it.

mass_market. Condition: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.
