Reviews

Toronto antiques dealer and amateur sleuth Lara McClintock (The Moche Warrior) accompanies co-worker Alex -and two other friends - to Ireland for the reading of a video will. Alex's bequest is a cliff-top cottage and one of seven clues that, if put together, lead to an "item of great value." Depairing of the teamwork needed from the deceased's greedy and dysfunctional family, Alex and Lara determined to find so-called treasure, spurred on by the suspicious deaths of a servant and gardener. The well-drawn characters' foray through Irish countryside and Celtic myth willdelight readers.

Late Irish business magnate Eamon Byrne speaks to his dysfunctional family from beyond the grave and presents them with a treasure map of sorts. Speaking on videotape at the reading of his will, Byrne attempts to force his family to work together by giving each one a line from an ancient Celtic epic poem. Taken together, the lines lead to a great treasure, which can only be found if the family pulls together and shares the clues. Drawn into this mess are Lara McClintoch, a Toronto antique dealer, and her associate Alex Stewart, who become involved in the treasure hunt as a lark and as an excuse to explore the lovely County Kerry countryside. When the hunt turns deadly, amateur sleuths Lara and Alex can't resist the temptation to ferret out the killer. This is the fourth "archaeological mystery" from Hamilton, and it is funny, cleverly plotted, and rich in ancient Celtic lore. A rewarding change of pace for mystery fans. Wes Lukowsky
