Victoria Blake was born in Oxford and studied history at the university. She is a qualified lawyer, has worked for a UK publisher, and now works part-time as a bookseller while she writes.
In British author Blake's engaging debut, world judo champion Samantha Falconer, now a London PI, returns to Oxford, where she spent her painful childhood, to look into the disappearance of the wife of John O'Connor, a psychiatrist friend with ghosts of his own. Having long regarded her dead father as a hero, Samantha is shocked to suddenly receive a letter from a man claiming to be him, warning that her life is in danger. As the investigation takes her back and forth from London, where the missing woman has a flat, Sam receives more mysterious communiqués and a gruesome threat. Complicating matters is a lingering attraction to an Oxford police detective and former lover still wincing from an embarrassing judo match with Sam. When her client's mistress turns up dead after being questioned by Sam, she's unsure whether to go on trusting O'Connor, who forces Sam to re-examine her recollections of the past. Blake's skill at depicting the dark and light side of her characters, the smoothly interwoven plot lines and the authentic settings make this a strong first.

Remainder mark. *** ABOUT THIS BOOK: Victoria Blake's debut novel introduces Samantha Falconer, a private eye whose personal life is every bit as fascinating as her cases. When she left Oxford, Sam Falconer thought she had put the ghosts of her past behind her. But, while working in London as a P.I., she is summoned home by her brother to investigate the disappearance of a young woman-and confront the trauma she's tried so hard to forget. The closer she gets to Oxford, the more uneasy she becomes. Then, out of the blue, Sam receives a letter from a man who's been dead for 28 years-her father. As Sam copes with emotional chaos and investigates her case, she finds that every trail leads back to the university. But academia is stingy with its secrets, and its pursuit of truth is limited by a self-protective instinct that could turn lethal at any moment. *** Quantity Available: 1.
