Inside the tower they track down the source of power to Professor Brett and WOTAN, his revolutionary new computer. Designed as a universal problem solver, WOTAN has suddenly begun to think for itself and has formulated a deadly plan. Using its phenomenal power it will programme humans to build mobile fighting computers, and with these indestructible war machines WOTAN will take over the world. A First Doctor adventure set in 1960s London, The War Machines pits the 1st Doctor against an early artificial-intelligence threat in one of the series' most distinctively contemporary urban settings. The story features companions Ben Jackson and Polly during the late William Hartnell era and is remembered for its modern Earth-based science fiction themes a significant shift in the mid-1960s series direction. Originally broadcast in Season 3 in 1966, The War Machines is historically important within Doctor Who continuity as the story that introduces Ben and Polly, companions who carry forward into the Second Doctor era after Hartnell's regeneration. This edition No. 136 in the Target Doctor Who Library is part of the highly collectible Target novelisation series published by Target Books under W.H. Allen, which adapted classic BBC serials into paperback form and became central to Doctor Who fandom and collecting culture throughout the 1970s-1990s. Seller Inventory # C0-MK051126P11
