From School Library Journal

Grade 1-4-Quick overviews of instruments and traditions associated with the type of music in question. The format limitation of one double-page spread per topic, each with two photos and two paragraphs of text, means that children learn very little about the respective subjects. In Folk and Country, there is little mention of the instruments' ethnic roots-information essential to understanding the essence of this genre. Religious Music is a little more successful as it conveys the rich variety of musical traditions associated with many different faiths. Rock looks at many of the electronic tools, such as computers, sequencers, and drum machines, that make modern rock possible. The vocabulary and writing style in all three books targets beginning readers; unfortunately, the narratives come across as overly simplistic. Each volume is profusely illustrated but the captions for the full-color photos overstate the obvious with comments such as, "These singers are using microphones." There's not much information here for report writers or for children who simply want to learn about these forms of music.
