Microorganisms discusses viruses, bacteria, protists, and fungi, as well as the structure of cells and the chemistry of living things. The books present information unfamiliar to many students in a manner that is lucid and comprehensible, with the help of appended glossaries. The clearly reproduced illustrations include highly magnified shots of microorganisms, reproductions of early engravings and black-and-white and color photos. In library collections, the study of microorganisms has been represented mainly by tomes for biologists and by picture books designed to show preschoolers why they should wash their hands. Succinctly written and effectively presented, the Microlife series offers a starting place for middle- and high-school students researching reports and science projects or simply interested in the field.
