About the Author

Catherine Chambers was born in Adelaide, Australia, and was brought up in the UK. She has written about 120 books for children and young adults on all kinds of subjects, including history, biographies, science and the arts.

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5-Broad and basic overviews of their respective subjects. Two-page topic treatments range from "What Is a Desert?" and "Mountain Animals" to "How Oceans and Seas Form." The large, bold texts and numerous full-color photographs, maps, and charts contribute to the books' appeal. However, many of the maps lack keys and some of the descriptive captions are unclear. In Deserts, the key to one map is actually lost in the gutter. All of the books discuss global warming, solar flares, and other environmental factors that effect the deserts, mountains, and oceans around us. Neil Morris's Deserts (Crabtree, 1995) includes similar content in a more appealing format and Seymour Simon's Mountains (Morrow, 1994) presents comparable information with a visually stunning layout. Chambers's books provide some useful information for reports, but most of it can be found in other sources.
