Proceeding from outside in, each book is chockablock with cutaways and diagrams, all well labeled, which explore the vehicle's various systems: from the engine to the galley in Plane; from the engine to the dashboard and the body in Car. Fact boxes give readers a break from the technical stuff. There are a few slipups: in Car, for example, there's no mention of the combustion chamber, and although the word odometer appears on a spread showing the parts of a dashboard, it's never explained in the book. Yet, curious kids with a love of things mechanical will eagerly grab these, and for the most part, they'll come away better informed. Stephanie Zvirin
