After years of stifling her writers muse and acquiring various uninspiring job-titles, Victoria Parker finally surrended to that persistant voice andpenned her first M&B romance. Turns out, creating havoc for feisty heroines and devilish heroes truly "is "the best job in the world. In her spare time she dabbles in interior design, loves discovering far flung destinations and getting into mischief with her rather wonderful family.
Gr. 1-3. Parker takes full advantage of kids' interest in how children live in other parts of the world in this, and other books, in the We're From series, which is part of Heinemann's First Library. A map of the country (with an inset showing the country's global position) provides context for the information that follows. Each book in the series focuses on three children, carefully selected to give readers at least some sense of a country's cultural and economic diversity. In India, readers meet Choti, growing up on farm without electricity or running water; Surya, whose friends and family make their homes on a large tea plantation; and Subodh, who lives with his parents in an apartment in a crowded modern city. Several pages of color photos, accompanied by brief text, show the children at home, at school, at play. There's some information about the country's history and geography, though not enough for report writers. It's the personal profiles that are the ticket here, and readers come away with a wider view of our great, big world. Stephanie Zvirin
