Democracy explains how this system of governing began and then goes on to discuss its evolution in Greece and Rome and how events in Britain and France eventually brought democracy to North America. The book lists democracy's "crucial elements," compares the strengths and weaknesses of democracies, examines how economic theory affects democracy, and discusses the problems and potential for international democracies beyond borders. Dictatorship examines what a dictatorship entails, its origins, and the different styles and what they achieve. Short profiles of various dictators (Mao, Sukarno, Pinochet, and Milosevic, among others) round out the treatment.
