Synopsis

This book was a timely choice for S.I.M.P. for their next volume to bring pediatricians and obstetricians up to date with what had been going on in their own field, but described in journals which they seldom or never see. Much of it is relevant and all of it is stimulating. To understand development now a days one must be at least conversant with the time when the various enzymes and metabolic pathways begin to function in fetal life and the reason why hormones and proteins appear in the bloodstream or in on of the organs, to function only for a time and then to disappear for ever in the life of that individual. We must know something about the role of 5-hydroxy Tryptamine in the development of the brain and from the practical point of view what is the future for the diagnosis of inborn errors of metabolism and preventable defects well before the time of birth.
