Are we all brothers and sisters under the skin? Esther Jackson, a black manager in a Los Angeles bank, confronts this question when she's the main witness to an incident of sexual harassment. Choices about friendship and race become an issue in her personal life as well. Campbell's strength is her ability to portray characters--black, white, Latino and Asian from different economic levels--sympathetically, although another narrator might have been more adept at differentiating the characters.
