In the brooding north country hills, a man and a woman fought for the passion they felt for each other that the world branded a disgrace...

Agnes Thorman – the proud but forlorn mistress of a once-grand estate, whose society forbade her the man who was her equal in all but name...

Robert Bradley – a gifted craftsman, as visionary and challenging as the dawning new age. He had yet to seize his dream, which could destroy the woman he loved...

And Milicent Thorman – the strange, wise girl-child fated to play a part in the lovers’ unfolding destiny...

The lives of these three are woven into a compelling story with the masterly touch of Catherine Cookson.

From Publishers Weekly:
In the English county of Durham prior to World War I, marrying out of one's class is social suicide. But a remarkable man named Robert Bradley bucks the establishment. A carpenter by trade but self-educated and sensitive, Robert escapes conventional marriage, but in so doing falls prey to violence. A chance encounter with Millie, the strange daughter of the castle, brings him into the orbit of the crumbling Thormans. Millie, dubbed "The Moth" by the locals because of her flitting escapades, ruins her elder sister Agnes's chances at a suitable marriage. When Agnes, shouldering the crumbling family fortunes alone, finds in Robert a source not only of commonsense but of love, the two of them defy convention. Cookson's (The Bannaman Legacy evocation of a class distinction supported even by its victims is compelling. First serial to Good Housekeeping; Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club alternates.

From Library Journal:
Almost immediately Cookson establishes one theme that she emphasizes constantly: English society before World War I had class barriers. Fewer than 50 pages into the novel, perceptive readers recognize that Agnes Thorman and Robert Bradley will cross those barriers to marry. As Agnes's monetary fortunes decline and Robert's advance, the absurdity of the division grows more apparent. Yet, Agnes's and Robert's affection is opposed by her profligate brothers and his fellow servants. Because the outcome is never in doubt, Cookson must use madness, murder, and sexual suggestion to keep the plot churning. In general she succeeds, but she definitely aims for her readers' emotions, not their intellect. Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club alternates. Kathy Piehl, Mankato State Univ., Minn.

Book Description Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Robert Bradley, a young man of independent mind and spirit, gave up his job in the Jarrow shipyards to work at his uncle's old-established carpenter's shop in a small village. Life with domineering Uncle John and his family did not always prove easy, however, and on Sunday Robert was glad to set off alone exploring the Durham countryside. At a friendly wayside inn he heard talk about Foreshaw Park, the sadly run-down estate of the once wealthy Thorman family, and walking home in the moonlight he had his first strange encounter with Millie, the ethereal girl-child of that house whose odd ways and nocturnal wanderings had led to her being known locally as 'Thorman's Moth'. The time came when a sudden and dramatic turn in Robert's affairs brought him a much closer involvement with the Thormans of Foreshaw, and especially with the elder daughter Agnes who shouldered so many of the burdens of this troubled household and who alone of all her family loved and protected the frail unworldly Millie. But this was 1913, and anything beyond the most formal relationship between servant and mistress had to face the barriers and injustices of a rigid social hierarchy that was soon to perish in the flames of war. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. Seller Inventory # GOR003692236
