Synopsis
Kruger's Alp is "a satirical fantasy of extraordinary invention and power built around the legends, the people and the political realities of South Africa. The novel is the story of priestly renegade Theodore Blanchaille and his search for the missing millions of the old Boer leader Paul Kruger, and his lost city of gold. It is an astonishing journey of revelation for Blanchaille through an exotic landscape peopled with spies, visionaries, terrorists, traitors, patriots and exiled presidents - a journey in which betrayal, disillusion and vicious assault lie in wait for him." In 1984, Kruger's Alp won the Whitbread Novel Award. This edition is now out of print.

About the Author
Christopher Hope was born in Johannesburg in 1944. He is the author of nine novels and one collection of short stories, including Kruger's Alp, which won the Whitbread Prize for Fiction, Serenity House, which was shortlisted for the 1992 Booker Prize, and My Mother's Lovers, published by Atlantic Books in 2006 to great acclaim. He is also a poet and playwright and author of the celebrated memoir White Boy Running (1988).
