Analyzes each of Truffaut's films, discusses their major themes, and looks at the influences on his work

Head of media at the West London Institute of Higher Education, Allen is a film producer who first analyzed the late French director's work in Truffaut (1974). This new "film-by-film guide" updates the earlier book, adding nine chapters and a new introduction to cover all 22 features. Allen asserts that Truffaut's films "are always about himself" and "always about love, in some form or other." Emphasizing the five films in the Antoine Doinel cycle, Allen explores this love/friendship theme, the "muted pessimism" and the autobiographical thread. The author's access to private papers and his 15-year friendship with Truffaut give a special importance to the critical insights. The book concludes with a detailed filmography and a chapter on Truffaut's unrealized projects.

Francois Truffaut died at age 52; he was one of France's most influential directors and a founder of the "new wave" movement of the 1950s. As a critic, he was a formulator of the "auteur" theory. This is an updating of Allen's Francois Truffaut (1974). A long-time friend, Allen writes with affection but with objectivity. The major themes of each film are analyzed and related to similar themes in other Truffaut films. The "Antoine Doinel" cycle is considered separately. There have been many other books about Truffaut, including Annette Insdorf's excellent Francois Truffaut ( LJ 8/78). This is recommended for collections not having Insdorf or other current studies of Truffaut. Roy Liebman, California State Univ. Lib., Los Angeles
