In the spring of 1946, the black American novelist, Richard Wright presented himself at the Rue de Fleurus apartment of Gertrude Stein, a meeting which symbolized the passing of one generation of "writers in Paris" and the birth of another. About the Author:

James Campbell was born in Glasgow and now lives in London. Between 1978 and 1982 he was editor of the New Edinburgh Review. Among his previous books is a biography of James Baldwin, Talking at the Gates. His play The Midnight Hour was performed in Philadelphia in 1993 and 1995.
