1975, British hardcover edition, Secker & Warburg, London, U.K. 234 pages. Savage, witty, brutal story of a plan to build a motorway through a rural English village. Lady Maude is having none of it. She plans a scheme with an odd gardener named Blott and the numerous officials engaged in the plan are going to be very, very sorry indeed. As will her husband, Sir Giles, who is having it off with a local female who is often bored during moments of copulation. Warning: this is a total scream, incredible, brutal humor, with an emphasis on brutal. Tom Sharpe is a definite genius, but his attacking, vivid prose is NOT for the faint of heart.

Tom Sharpe was an English satirical author, born in London and educated at Lancing College and at Pembroke College, Cambridge. After National Service with the Royal Marines he moved to South Africa in 1951, doing social work and teaching in Natal, until deported in 1961.
His work in South Africa inspired the novels Riotous Assembly and Indecent Exposure. From 1963 until 1972 he was a History lecturer at the Cambridge College of Arts and Technology, which inspired his "Wilt" series Wilt, The Wilt Alternative, Wilt on High and Wilt in Nowhere.
Blott on the Landscape is a satiric farce in which the feuding between an aristocratic couple spills disastrously into the public arena. The humor is in the Monty Python tradition-- slapstick, vulgar and sometimes cruel. This piece of fluff gets better than it deserves from David Suchet, whose lively and colorful performance is likely to hold many listeners who would lose interest in the printed page. In the American tradition, he provides a package which outshines its contents. Production values and packaging are first class. J.N. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine
