Ryan Ann Hunter is the pen name of Pamela D. Greenwood and Elizabeth G. Macalaster, who wrote this book together. They are the authors of Cross a Bridge, their first picture book for children. Pamela Greenwood lives in Mendham, New Jersey, and Elizabeth Macalaster lives in Westlake Village, California.
Edward Miller is an illustrator and graphic designer who wrote and illustrated The Curse of Claudia and illustrated numerous other books, including Cross a Bridge, also by Ryan Ann Hunter. He lives in Hoboken, New Jersey.
PreSchool-Grade 3-Even though the text is simple, Hunter is able to convey lots of information about skyscrapers. Besides offering a bit of history and identifying a number of these tall buildings, the book includes an overview of how they are constructed. Miller's graphically designed, full-color illustrations with flattened perspectives and boldly colored backgrounds complement the subject. An outline map on the endpapers identifies some of the world's highest buildings. Readers might also enjoy Gail Gibbons's Up Goes the Skyscraper (Four Winds, 1986), which concentrates on the construction of a single building. Chris Oxlade offers more detail for older students in Skyscrapers and Towers (Raintree/Steck-Vaughn, 1997). However, Into the Sky provides the facts on this subject while capturing the excitement inherent in creating huge structures that soar above their surroundings.
