Debi Gliori studied illustration and design at Edinburgh College of Art. Among her many successful picture books is the award-winning Mr Bear series. She lives in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Ages 4-7. As hard as she tries, Katie never quite fits in and is called "Katie-left-out," or "Katie-who-didn't-know-how-to-play." Her invitations to play are rudely rebuffed or misinterpreted by the other children. All she wants is to join in, to be part of the circle. Then one winter morning, Katie sets off on her own to build a small snowman--a "snowchild"--and is joined by another girl, Jenny. Together, they build a family of snowmen and become good friends. It's a predictable story, of course, but the cruelty of the other children rings painfully true, and Katie's forbearance is admirable. No adult comes to her rescue; in fact, her parents are never mentioned. Gliori's prose is uneven, drifting from overblown adultspeak ("They play in groups, they play in pairs, together in a circle, to keep the night away") to the more natural speech of childhood. Nonetheless, her illustrations have clean lines and are appealing, and her empathy for the protagonist may offer a measure of solace to the many Katies of the world. Julie Walton
